Practice

On Practice you answer today’s cards one at a time, with no chat beside them. You get there from Practise 8 on the Academy, or from today’s practice in your Inbox. The number is how many cards you’ll get. Practise on a track or a spot gives you only its cards. See practice for how it chooses your cards.

In the picture, someone at ACME has eight cards today. The first asks them to write what happens at each depot before a customer goes live.

Practice: Academy › Practice at the top; a card headed Sign-in and access with a Write mark and 1 of 8 beside a bar; the question What happens at each depot before a customer goes live?; a box saying In your own words…; Confidence with Sure, Think so and Guess; End, and Check, greyed.Practice: Academy › Practice at the top; a card headed Sign-in and access with a Write mark and 1 of 8 beside a bar; the question What happens at each depot before a customer goes live?; a box saying In your own words…; Confidence with Sure, Think so and Guess; End, and Check, greyed.
  1. The breadcrumb. Click Academy to go back.
  2. The track the card comes from.
  3. The kind of card, here Write (see The kinds of card). A card whose fact or wording changed since you last practised it also says Changed. A new fact’s card says New.
  4. Cards done today, as a bar, and which card this is: 1 of 8.
  5. The question.
  6. Your answer. It looks different for each kind of card.
  7. Confidence. How sure you are: Sure, Think so or Guess, chosen before you check.
  8. End. Stops for now and goes back to the Academy. The cards you didn’t answer stay for later.
  9. Check. Checks your answer, once you’ve answered and said how sure you are.

A fact has several cards, each a different question about it. You see one of them per fact each day.

  • Choose one: pick the answer from a few options. A fact you meet for the first time starts with this kind.
  • Complete: fill the gap in a sentence, like “At a food company, a depot manager is called a ___.”
  • Write: answer in your own words. Your answer is read for its meaning, point by point, so the words don’t have to match. Write cards come up only when your organisation has a model set up to check them.
  • Match: pick each name’s definition from a list. It comes up when three or more spots’ definitions are due in the same practice.

The kind of card you get also follows your learning profile.

Tom's first card: Security questionnaires, Complete, 1 of 6; At a food company, a depot manager is called a ___.; a box saying Fill the gap…; Confidence with Sure, Think so and Guess; End and Check.Tom's first card: Security questionnaires, Complete, 1 of 6; At a food company, a depot manager is called a ___.; a box saying Fill the gap…; Confidence with Sure, Think so and Guess; End and Check.

Answer, choose how sure you are, and Check turns on.

Press Check, and your result replaces Confidence.

  • The verdict. Right, Partly right or Not quite.
  • For a written answer, you see each point a full answer needs, ticked or crossed, and your total. It tells you if your answer claims something the source doesn’t.
  • The answer, when yours wasn’t right. A written card has its points instead.
  • What the source says, quoted. A match card shows each fact instead.
  • When the fact comes back. Later today, tomorrow, or in days.
Ana's written card after Check: Right; 2 of 2 points, with before go-live and each depot rehearses ticked; a quote headed Go-live with the Landscape's entry; Comes back in 51 days.; End and Next.Ana's written card after Check: Right; 2 of 2 points, with before go-live and each depot rehearses ticked; a quote headed Go-live with the Landscape's entry; Comes back in 51 days.; End and Next.
  1. The verdict.
  2. How many of the points you made.
  3. A point a full answer covers, ticked when your answer makes it and crossed when it misses it.
  4. What the source says, here Go-live’s entry in the Landscape.
  5. When the fact comes back.
  6. Next. Moves to the next card. On the last card it reads Finish.

Your answer can’t be changed once it’s checked. How soon a fact comes back depends on the check and on how sure you were, and nobody marks themselves. A wrong answer comes back soonest, however sure you were. A right one comes back later the surer you were. A partly right answer counts as a guess. A fact someone rewrote starts over, so it comes back within days even when you get it right. A reworded card keeps its schedule.

After the last card the page says “Today’s practice is done”, with how many you got right, and a button back to the Academy. You get at most eight cards at a time. When more were due, the Academy’s Practise button shows the rest straight away.

When nothing is due, the page says “Nothing to practise today”, and that new cards arrive as your tracks build.

Only you can see your answers and how sure you were. Nobody else can, administrators included.
